Queen Victoria Square

The City Hall and the 1903 statue of Queen Victoria in Queen Victoria Square around 1915. The larger-than-life 35-foot statue, like the 1923 subterranean municipal toilets beneath, is listed. The statue almost avoided being placed above these lavatories, and would have done so if the Queen’s Memorial Committee had got its way. The minutes of the committee from 22 February 1923 tell us: ‘resolution passed that the statue of Queen Victoria taken down in the City Square be not erected over the new public lavatory.’ However, later minutes reveal that the statue had been re-erected in the square – over the toilets – by January 1924.
